>How-To-Repeat:
Using pkgsrc-2007Q2.
XCode Tools (version 2.4.1). 

1. build www/php5
2. build archivers/php-zlib
3. Ensure that "extension=zlib.so" is in your ${SYSCONFBASE}/php.ini
4. run `php --version'
5. See it fail to load the extension.

This happens with every extension I've attempted to build: zlib, pgsql, xsl, 
pear.
