I notice that the pkgsrc still is based on the very old 0.59 version of mpg123.

The new 0.6x release series includes all known (security) bug fixes and also comes under the LGPL 2.1 license.
Please have a look at http://mpg123.org for current information.

If there are problems with building it under NetBSD, please contact me so I can fix it...
