I just came across this problem (or something very similar). I know
this was closed with a feeback timeout but I'm not sure the problem is
fixed. I just recently did a clean pkgsrc bootstrap on an IRIX 6.5.22
system. This system only has GCC from SGI's IRIX Freeware collection.
The only way I can get something like pkgtools/digest to build correctly
is to make sure that etc/mk.conf has CC=gcc. If I don't do this it
tries to call /usr/bin/cc, via a wrapper. This fails as the system
doesn't have any of the MIPSPro compiler tools installed.

Should this PR be reopened or a new PR be filed?
