OK, I've updated. The file and revision are as you describe.
Linking still fails exactly as described previously. The only libraries
explicitly mentioned in the link attempts are "-lgcc" and "-lSystem".
It seems the "EX_LIB" ("EX_LIBS"?) entries in the distribution Makefiles
are not being honored?
