I bootstrapped pkgsrc and tried to build perl5 on Linux.  The build log and 
failure message are at

It mentions a problem with line 956 of the top perl makefile, which I put up at

http://terrorpin.net/~ben/docs/comp/os/linux/pkgsrc/makefile.txt

I see that line 956 contains nothing but a single digit 0.
