   In the makefile variable documentation (section 9.1), the following text exists in
   the second paragraph just above the 'parsing algorithm' note:

"A backspace character and an immediately following hash character are 
 replaced with a single hash character."

   From what I can deduce, this should be: "A backslash character.." instead.  This 
   is a very minor nit, but should be corrected for clarity and consistancy.
