 Aha. It contained these three lines:
 
 --> #include <xpkgwedge.def>
 --> 
 --> #include <OpenMotif.def>
 
 >  The entry for OpenMotif.def should *not* exist.
 
 Having removed the last two lines of the host.def file, xv builds; my
 problem is solved.
 
 FYI, this system was upgraded about a month ago from 1.6.2 (with a
 bunch of pkgsrc builds from circa March 2004) to 3.0, at which point I
 refreshed my pkgsrc installation.
 
 I don't know offhand what you might need to know regarding this, but
 I'm more than happy to provide any further information on request.
