The configure script is ok, the patch-ae is wrong. The following is 
syntactically invalid in bash:
---start---
#!/usr/pkg/bin/bash
if echo
   echo
else
#
fi
---end---

we need to comment out the ``else'' in patch-ae too:
---
if ...
...
#else
#
fi
---
