 This problem should be easily reproducable on other platforms when lazy
 linking is disabled.  It complains completely correctly.
 
 There are two possible solutions:
 (a) Each user of MCS plugins is required to provide
 mcs_plugin_check_version.
 (b) Each MCS plugin provides a *weak* version of
 mcs_plugin_check_version.
 
 Both need some hacking, but the latter is much better from an API POV.
