I'm not sure, if I understand you well, but program which dumpes core is
gmake
I noticed more Segmentation Faults.
This one is during configure phase, just before begining of build phase:

ssl.h => ../include/openssl/ssl.h
ssl2.h => ../include/openssl/ssl2.h
ssl3.h => ../include/openssl/ssl3.h
ssl23.h => ../include/openssl/ssl23.h
tls1.h => ../include/openssl/tls1.h
kssl.h => ../include/openssl/kssl.h
ssltest.c => ../test/ssltest.c
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/usr/pkgsrc/security/openssl/work.pkgsrc-i64/openssl-0.9.7i/ssl'
making links in apps...
Segmentation Fault - core dumped
Segmentation Fault - core dumped
===> Building for openssl-0.9.7inb1

I've got Segmentation Fault also when press ctrl+c during compilation

Can you tell me how to do this?
In http://www.prz.edu.pl/~raczkow/openssl/ there is a core file and sample
output from truss gmake
I don't know if it is what you ask, but maybe you will find it helpful
