Tried it both ways: immediately after logon, and from within screen.

But I wrote already, that currently I'm using ready-made mc package - the
faulty one was compiled from the sources. Now the viewer seems to be working
OK.

Yes, it works now too.
Perhaps could be possible to bring back panels toggling ( <Control>-<O> )?
