Can you bring up that topic on tech-pkg? Personally I'd like to
make CREATE_WRKDIR_SYMLINK=no the default or remove it completely.
It has hidden some abuse in the past and adds problems for shared and
read-only pkgsrc trees, like you indicated.
Depending on the action being choosen, I'd ask you to provide a patch
for the guide :-)
