Not impossible, though I had updated using cvs this week.

There were modifications, including:
P mk/bdb.buildlink3.mk
P mk/bsd.pkg.mk
P mk/subst.mk
P mk/bulk/bsd.bulk-pkg.mk
P mk/defaults/mk.conf
P mk/scripts/binpkg-cache
P mk/scripts/genreadme.awk

Well, first I removed digest, then I did as you suggest. And this
time, it did indeed fetch and install "digest" by itself.
Weird, but clearly you were right, and there was something the matter
with my pkgsrc tree. Thanks for the pointer.
Anne.
