 Hm.

 The installation is 2+ years old and has been upgraded from 1.6.x ->
 2.x -> 3.0beta on the way.

 In the end, I manually removed
 /var/db/pkg/standalone-tcsh-6.14.00nb1, applied Martin's patch from
 PR 32171 (which mine is pretty similar to), then ran "pkg_admin
 rebuid" a few times and cleaned out the fall-out.

 It does a noiseless "Make deinstall && make reinstall" now for standalone-tcsh.

 We'll probably never know what emptied the +CONTENTS file.

 I think the PR can be closed as a duplicate of Martin's 32171.
