I have had similar problems several times too (with NetBSD/i386 1.5.x,
1.6.x and 2.0.x). It has happened to me when I run out of swap. Sometimes
I can ssh remotely in and kill X and recover. But sometimes, I can't even
 ping the box.

(This has happened to me several times when I have firefox running and
using up a lot of memory and also while compiling qt3-libs.)

Can you reproduce this and check your swap and memory usage?
pkgsrc/sysutils/free is useful and also "swapctl -sk".

Also is your firefox itself using up too much memory too?
