Running in-tree XFree86 (this might be important)

Using pkgsrc-current, all installed pkg's up to date as of begining of this
week.

Since the last update, gnome has redraw problems if you use a plain color
as desktop background. Selecting a background image makes the problem
go away.

To view the problem in the default installation, just open the right-click 
context menu on the desktop and then left-click somewhere else to close it.
Gnome first draws the de-obscured area in the right background color, then
overlays it with random garbage.

s/a - just use it on a XFree86 server with XRENDER support (on servers w/o
XRENDER the drawing is painfully slow but correct).

Michael suggested that this might be caused by XRENDER gradient extensions
that gnome uses w/o proper testing and that the XFree86 server does not
implement. This would mean everything works ok on x.org servers - but I can't
test that easily. It's also not clear if the pkgsrc configuration is partly
responsible for this or if it's a native gnome problem.
