 Just a quick comment to say that I might have misunderstood one of the 
 earlier points, but "nroff" is available for IRIX: it's not installed by 
 default, but SGI's Freeware does include it.  Can its presence be detected 
 rather than never building pre-formatted man pages (if I've understood and 
 this is what the new behavior is)
