 But I have a -lpthread at the end when building the shared library that
 you don't have. (You have -pthread all the time; is it in your CFLAGS?)

 I have "PREFER_NATIVE_PTHREADS?= yes", nothing else seems related:
 % grep '^[^#.]*[^?]=' /etc/mk.conf
 MANZ=yes
 PKG_SUFX= .tbz
 USE_BUILTIN.Xfixes=             yes
 USE_BUILTIN.Xcomposite=         yes
 DISTDIR=/usr/distfiles
 ACCEPTABLE_LICENSES+=   graphviz-license
 ACCEPTABLE_LICENSES+=   jdk-license
 ACCEPTABLE_LICENSES+=   jdk13-license
 ACCEPTABLE_LICENSES+=lame-license
 USE_ESOUND=NO
 USE_I586=YES
 USE_MMX=YES
