Same test failure on 2.0/i386, so not sparc64 specific.
The tests work if one does
cd work*/pkg*/check
make check
so it's perhaps some buildlink weirdness, but I've tried
to understand it for an hour new and didn't make any headway.
Any ideas, Johnny?

That's a red herring -- pkg-config comes with its own copy of glib,
to avoid having any dependencies, and the check target runs the tests
for the included glib too.
