 Yes, you're right. Upon a private mail from tcsh's maintainer who failed
 to reproduce my problem and switching to a different system I had
 configured months ago and where Umlauts worked (which I hadn't in mind
 when filing the PR) I found it was all due to a misconfigured kernel.
 Again in private mail, I told tcsh's maintainer that he could close the
 PR, which he so far didn't. Now again for the public: this PR can be
 closed! ;-)
