 To note, the problem goes away when bash is built without the multibyte 
 option (which is the default), e.g. "make install PKG_OPTIONS.bash=". 
 This implies that the multibyte code messes up the non-printing 
 characters' length calculation.
 
 AFAIK multibyte is not the default in freebsd/darwin/etc where this 
 problem did not occur. Not a NetBSD problem then, per se, but something 
 which occurs with the netbsd default build options, which differ from 
 the rest of the world?
 
 I don't need multibyte, so the problem is solved for me now. So from my 
 perspective, the PR can be closed and considered a bash bug... it could 
 still be an issue in netbsd libc multibyte routines, though, I just 
 didn't dig that far.
