I tested with bash as provided by the Debian package 2.05a-11 on a Debian
3.0 system.

reed@sloth:~$ echo $PS[pressed TAB here twice]
$PS1 $PS2 $PS4

And two spaces in-between each above.

My PS1 ends with a space and my PS2 ends with a space.
