 Thanks for your reply. I think there was a misunderstanding on your side 
 mixing the parts of the NetBSD base operating system sets and 3rd party 
 application software packages. What you effectively did was reinstall ALL 
 the NetBSD base OS, including the "etc" set, by which you junked your /etc 
 files, including (but not limited to) /etc/rc.conf.
 
 Now I understand this is unfortunate, but I wonder how this 
 misunderstanding arose. As far as I know, sysinst tries to be very 
 consistent in naming the base operating system parts "sets", not 
 "packages". If you can point me out at any dialogues during the 
 installation that use the term "package" or that lead to the understanding 
 that sysinst is not doing installation of the base operating system but 
 installing 3rd party packages, please let me know where they are 
 (including exact wording) so that can be fixed.
 
 For your current situation, I'm afraid you'll have to restore the backup 
 of your /etc directory (maybe if you're lucky there's still some /etc.OLD 
 or so).
