It turns out that the problem only occurs if the user starting soffice
is not in the local password file (for example, if authentication is
done via NIS).
Knowing this, it becomes obvious that the culprit is
/usr/pkg/emul/linux/etc/nsswitch.conf.
If this file is brought in sync with /etc/nsswitch.conf or removed
entirely, soffice works fine.
This brings up the question which of the files in
/usr/pkg/emul/linux/etc/ should actually exist as there obviously may be
conflicts with the regular environment.
The suse_base package should probably carefully be pruned wrt these
files.
