        In view of the recent changes made to this package splitting out C++ 
support, I suspect that the correct
        fix is to rework tools/Makefile.* so that C++ is not required as these 
tools are all C code.

        Try to build with gcc 3.4.3 (from lang/gcc34) and the link errors will 
be evident.
