I find that I am able to boot (partway, anyway) into the new 
installation with this from grub:

root (hd0,9,a)
kernel /netbsd
boot

I was excited to see messages start to scroll by, but they stopped dead at

warning: no /dev/console

Am wondering if this is because I was unable to complete the install (run 
postinstall and etcupdate and so on) ...

Very confused and frustrated but am going to sleep on it.
