Well, while it's not native SATA, a P-ATAPI optical drive via a
Sunplus-based SATA-Host->PATA-Device bridge I have works fine
with the SiI3124 & SiI3132 controllers I have here.

However, when I plug this into a i82801EB's SATA port
the drive makes awful noises when I turn the box on,
so, yeah, it could very well be your VT8237 not
implementing ATAPI over SATA properly.
