Disabling either one of ehci, ohci or acpi makes both problems go away. There
must be some conflict between them...

... because it wasn't enabled in GENERIC on that branch. :-) I disbled ehci
again for now because I need it the least of the three (the only USB device
I'll be connecting to this box is a keyboard).
Now I only need to figure out how to enable AHCI support for my SATA disks.
The BIOS seems to have no option for this...
