install kernel does that for all the system? Seems a bit out of the box.

Ok, that is not an issue here. Though I didn't know that this worked with
FreeBSD.

Where "obscure" usually boils down to "not mainstream". But I've tried to
avoid any hardware that is frowned upon by free OS.
