Unfortunately, due to device support, in many cases only the older
or cheep stuff is an option.

I understand the arc driver makes status of a Areca SATA II
hotswap hardware raid available within the OS for freebsd. But
nobody has ported it to netbsd.

is there a sata II hardware raid with a netbsd interface? no.
