From my limited experience, I believe the only reliable way is to fsck /,
/usr, and /var manually and mount them (/usr can be ro, rest rw). Although
we do have a /rescue/vi, it's practically unusable without the terminal
databases in /usr. That is, we do have an /rescue/e{d,x} as well, if you
dare :^)
