I've used POP3 or IMAP, which works for mail but not for the
calendaring features; once you delete a mail item from
Exchange any associated meeting invitation is lost. (Of
course, it's possible that neither POP3 nor IMAP are enabled
on your Exchange server.)

I used the web interface to set 'out of the office' and such
when I needed to.
