Is it possible to get Java running (enough to run Eclipse?) under
NetBSD/amd64?

Oddly enough, I found that emacs is the best debugging tool I've
found so far for Unix:ish systems. It's _far_ from what I've come to
expect from debugging tools from my time with OS/2, but at least it gets
some of the basics done in a pretty easy way. Some caveats, though:
Watching variables is not possible without gdb6, emacs says. And it's
pretty buggy (I don't know if it's gdb or ddd/emacs, but I get the same
crashes no matter which front-end I use).

As an editor, I detest emacs -- but as a debugger, it's helping me. :-)
