Hello Chavdar,

Thanks for the information.  After some experimentation, the WD Mybook
seems to work (at least for reading, it contains an NTFS partition at
present). The problems I get with the generic enclosure seem to vary a
lot depending on what I put inside it, so hopefully it's just a
question of finding the right drive.
