I remember that LCD was on the NetBSD "toaster".

The press release at http://www.embeddedarm.com/news/netbsd_toaster.htm
says:

"The 4x40 text mode LCD is a raw HD44780 based LCD available at
allelectronics.com This devices uses the bit-banged hd44780 kernel driver
which allows attachment into the system as a standard NetBSD wsdisplay."

"locate hd44780" found a few files. So there is a NetBSD webpage:
The LCD is shown on http://www.netbsd.org/gallery/in-Action/

I see it may be available for evbarm and cobalt -- I don't know what needs
to be done to make it work for i386.
