What dhcp server? And do you have access to that?

Setting 'option host-name "foo";' in the dhcpd.conf, and 'request 
[...],host-name, [...]' in /etc/dhclient.conf handles things nicely 
for me. I don't bother with an /etc/hosts entry, though.
