My inclination would be to run the i386 version, so you can run
acroread, openoffice-bin, maybe flash, maybe codecs for mplayer.

If you enjoy fixing 64-bit bugs in other people's code, then amd64 is
a better choice.  Seriously, I use sparc64, and things are getting
better, more so with 'server' type programs than 'desktop'.

Another consideration is memory; if you have more than ~3.5GB you
can't use it under i386 and amd64 would be better.
