My initial problem (NetBSD dropped into debugger) has been resolved  
through replacement of RAM.
But corruption of DMESG and MESSAGES pertain.
The corruption seems to occur regardless of distribution. I tired
- NetBSD Live! CD 2007
- ftp://ftp-asim.lip6.fr/outgoing/bouyer/i386/
-  
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/HEAD/200611240000Z/iso/i386cd-current.iso
all with the same result.
Attached is a copy of /var/run/dmesg.boot
Anybody got an idea?

[demime 1.01d removed an attachment of type application/octet-stream which had a name of dmesg.boot]
