I can confirm that there are some bugs in the geometry-detection code,
in case the drive sends out messed up replies to "mode page" inquiries.
I found out with firewire but my external box does the same with usb, as
I noticed later.  Here is the start of the thread:

My problem may require the same... I found some workaround but it could
be done better, I hope.
