Thanks.  It helps.  Thanks also to Geert Hendrickx, who sent me the same 
observation about multimedia/mplayer-plugin-seamonkey.

It's not konqueror's fault.  I tried running kmplayer alone and discovered 
that it leaves the mplayer processes after it exits.

kmplayer doesn't leave a process behind if it uses the xine back end.

I filed a bug report for kmplayer with the mplayer back end:
