I took the ATI Radeon 9250 out of the Solaris x86 box and turned on the
builtin nvidia nforce4 video on the motherboard. Xorg sees it as a VESA card
since it doesn't support nforce4, but can probe enough for VESA. The same
same thing happened with the ATI Radeon 9250. The card BIOS returned a 
device string that it didn't understand.

Both XFree86 and Xorg probe cards in the same way. If the vendor string from
the BIOS is not in the drivers list pf possible strings, then it is a VESA
card.

Both XFree86 and Xorg are trailing current technology, since Nvidia and
ATI are both proprietary these days.
