Keyboard issues and xdm/gdm/kdm are usually caused by a missing "vt5" argument
to the X server.

I forgot in which config file gdm stores this information - find out where
the /usr/X11R6/bin/X command is configured and make sure it has a "vt5"
as last argument on it's command line.
