 	I've done something very similar with remote machines.
 	- Extract new kernel, mv /netbsd /onetbsd, ln <new_kernel> /netbsd
 	- reboot
 	- extract exerything except etc.tgz
 	- usr/sbin/postinstall -s .../etc.tgz
