Why have root own it? Why not just keep your "pkgsrc" user owning it?
My pkgsrc tree is /home/pkgsrc and at /usr/pkgsrc on different systems. I
usually never have them owned by root. And I often have a dedicated
"pkgsrc" group that owns it.
I also don't use cvs client as root.
