That doesn't help unfortunately. From "tcpdump" output it looked like
MacOS X used 16KB by default anyway which isn't to bad.

BTW: it's also not a problem with the NFS server. A NetBSD 3.99.14 client
     can read 26MB/s while the MacOS X system only gets 2.3MB/Sec.
