Thanks to PCIe you can simple put in a network card and it will perform
at full GbE speed. Some ports actually have extra Broadcom or
SysKonnect PCIe chips by default. But beware: some port with two
GbE ports use a PCI chip for the second port which will not perform
at full GbE speed because the bus is too slow.

No, VIA isn't a choice. There chipset are not very reliable and their
PCI implementation is slow.

AMD 8139 boards should still be available. But they are a bit old-fashioned
(e.g. no PCIe) and need registered DDR modules which are expensive.
