Yes, the laptop's old enough to have APM not ACPI. Big bonus!

I just run 'apmd' from the rc scripts, and when I want to suspend I type 
"zzz". This will put things to sleep immediately. It still consumes some 
power, so the machine can't be suspended for more than a few days, but
that's fine with me.
