In part because my XFree86 4.4.0 seems to acting up suddenly; and I wanted
to give xorg a try; and xorg has better support for newer graphics cards (at
least that's what I understand).

Any reason why you're installing Xorg when you have fully functional XFree86
in
the base system? What does Xorg have that XFree86 doesn't?
