I wrote a script for that:

It creates a list of packages to update with pkg_tarup. Then it creates a 
list with packages to delete and rebuild. If nothing failed the 
backup-packages are deleted.

If something goes wrong you install the backed up packages.

I use it to jump from pkgsrc-snapshot to pkagsrc-snapshot and it works 
well enough.
