Subject: asterisk from pkgsrc leads to high load average

Yesterday I installed asterisk from pkgsrc, and when I run it, my load
average goes up to 10 or so, even though systat and top both show the cpu
usage as effectively 0 (and there are no SIP/any other type of calls coming
in/going out of the box). I tried getting the latest asterisk from the
asterisk CVS repository and building that, and I see the same thing. My
system is a stock NetBSD 2.0 release.
Is anyone else running asterisk seeing this? Any idea where it might come from?
